PUERTO PLATA'S TELEFERICO

The Montana "Pico Isabel Torres" stands some 800 meters above Puerto Plata. In 1970, at its summit, was installed "Christ Redeemer" (a smaller version of a statue which exists in Brazil). The next year marked the beginning of the construction of the road "The Cupey", which lrf to the top of the Mountain and soon after that, the idea occurred to construct, with tourist purposes, a funicular. The word is of Latin origin and means "moved by means of a rope or cable." The funicular is composed of three wires, two cabins, two stations and a bra tower 50 meters high. The cabins are of a lightweight metal and have large windows with safety glass. The origin of the funicular is at the bottom of the hill and has locations for various services. In 1974 all works were completed and started trial runs that lasted 6 months.

POÁS VOLCANO, COSTA RICA

The most developed of the country's national parks protects the most dramatic of the region's volcanoes, which rises above the northwest Meseta Central. On clear days you can see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from its summit. Peering down into the crater may evoke the same sensations that virgins of Pre-Columbian times felt moments before they were tossed in as sacrificial lambs to the gods. The story behind the conservation of Poás Volcano began in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the 1960s. When Costa Rican student Mario Boza visited the U.S.Park, he was extremely impressed and decided to develop a plan to manage the Poás Volcano area in a similar way.

BARRIO SAN DIEGO, CARTAGENA

San Diego neighborhood, in Cartagena de Indias is a place that since its origin until today has highly influenced the events in Colombia. In pre columbian times its coasts were inhabited by warrior indians of the Caribe race which would give problems to more than one colonizing expedition that dared to disembark in its beaches. The honor of the foundation was given to Don Pedro de Heredia on June 1st of 1533 with the name of "Cartagena de Poniente", to make it different from "Cartagena de Levante", in Spain; both with similar bays. The rising population would be target of the greed of English and French invaders, and the fact is that its quality of slave trade port and commercial port made it very appealing to foreign eyes. Therefore their protection and defense were more than urgent, beginning with the Fuerte del Boqueron in the XVIth century (where today stands the Fuerte del Pastelillo)...

WILLEMSTAD, CAPITAL CITY OF CURACAO

Willemstad’s historic core had suffered from the public revolt of May 1969 in the city which left key historic areas partly destroyed as a result of the city fires ignited by the revolting masses. This was followed by sheer neglect of the city’s historic structures in the next two decades. A Building Ordinance dating from 1935 was the sole instrument to regulate the city’s development. With the ambition to revitalize the city and to have historic Willemstad inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO the development of a coherent package of legal and financial instruments for the protection of the historic city was started in 1988 by ICAW Interregional Committee Action Willemstad. After ten years of hard work The Historic Area of Willemstad Inner City and Harbour was awarded the World Heritage status in December 1997.
